Common Threads Quilt Guild Exhibition

This exhibit includes the work of over 25 members of the Common Thread Quilt Guild, and is a very popular exhibit at the Kings Art Center.  The Guild members are from the Hanford, Lemoore and Visalia area, and the focus of their work is often in non-traditional approaches to the art of quilting.  The resulting work, frequently including a variety of fiber and found materials, ranges from wall hangings, banners, and framed pieces, to clothing and the traditional quilt.  The work is always full of humor and words of wisdom, while reflecting a commitment to good design and excellent craftsmanship.

Quilt art has been called a paradox.  Traditionally, the term /quilt /refers to two or more layers of fabric stitched together to function as a covering.  However, many artists use quilting as their medium without regard to traditional function.  Even the term /quilting /has expanded because contemporary quilt artists often use a wide range of materials to bring expression to their work.  Computers and highly technical tools now make it possible to create both two and three-dimensional "quilts" from any image of idea.

Established in 1998, the Common Threads Quilt Guild's mission is to create a community of quilters to share ideas, develop skills, and encourage the tradition of quilt making in the Hanford/Lemoore areas.  Monthly meetings include a variety of quilt making activities, and quilt teachers from all over the world are hired to deliver lectures and teach weekend workshops.  To raise funds for its charity and educational programs, the Guild sells raffle tickets for an Opportunity Quilt.  The next Opportunity Quilt will be awarded at the 2009 Kings County Fair.  For more information on the Guild and its activities contact Sara Kelly at www.commonthreadsquiltguild.com
